Chaminda Vaas sets a world record of 8 for 19 and leaves everyone behind. The first match of the LG Abans Tri-Series at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground in Colombo on December 8 saw Sri Lanka thrash Zimbabwe and witness records tumbling in a tizzy.
Left-arm fast-medium bowler Chaminda Vaas (8-3-19-8) returned with a world-record figure after his captain Sanath Jayasuriya opted to field first. Chaminda Vaas dismissed Dion Ebrahim, Grant Flower, Stuart Carlisle, Andy Flower, Craig Wishart, Tatenda Taibu, Heath Streak, and Mluleki Nkala.
It was a nightmare for Zimbabwe batsmen; they couldn’t cope with the swing bowling of Vaas. Chaminda Vaas performance in the first match of the tournament beat the previous best of 7-30 by his teammate Muttiah Muralitharan against India at Sharjah in 2000-01. Vaas also recorded a hat-trick on his way to the best bowling figures in the 1776 One-Day Internationals played until then.
Zimbabwe, dismissed for just 38 in 15.4 overs, now carries the dubious honor of registering the lowest score in one-day internationals. Pakistan’s total of 43 against the West Indies at Cape Town in 1992–93 was the worst ever. Zimbabwe’s previous lowest score, meanwhile, was the 94 they made against Pakistan at Sharjah in 1996–97. Sri Lanka, who knocked off the winning runs in just 4.1 over’s, also had the pleasure of registering the fastest one-day win ever.
The match aggregate of 78 for 11 in 20 overs’ is one of the lowest in a one-day international match. Chaminda Vaas is the only bowler to take eight wickets in an ODI match. A few days ago, he claimed 14 wickets against the West Indies on the same ground.
