Keep in mind that Alan Butcher was an excellent, stylish backfoot player.
Although he just appeared in one test match for England against India at the Oval in 1979, his son Mark Butcher scored 4,288 runs in 71 test matches for England. Alan Butcher helped his son to rebuild his technique, and he made an unexpected comeback in 2001. His fighting and blazing—173 not out against Australia at Headingley—turned a stiff run-chase into a breeze. It was a lifetime inning.
