Zafar Iqbal: A Forgotten All-Rounder of 1990’s

Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry was born March 6, 1969, in Karachi. He was a promising cricketer who had a brief international career; he played eight ODIs in 1995. Zafar Iqbal was a medium-pace all-rounder who played for multiple teams in domestic cricket. He represented Pakistan A, Pakistan, Karachi, Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, Karachi Blues, Karachi Whites, National Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan Cricket Board, and XI. Zafar Iqbal made his ODI debut against arch-rivals India in the Asia Cup match at Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium on April 7, 1995. He was a handy lower-order batsman and somebody who could chip in with the ball in the middle overs.

He played his last ODI against Sri Lanka at Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium on Oct 17, 1995. In the eight ODIs, he just managed to score 48 runs, with the best being 18. He took 3 wickets at an average of 45.67, with the best bowling of 2 for 37. Zafar Iqbal could not get enough chances, as Pakistan found some other fine all-rounders in that era. But he was, in fact, an all-rounder who used to play at lower numbers and had the ability to take important wickets in the middle. His first-class cricket spanned more than 10 years. In the 72 matches, he scored 2514 runs with the best of 128 and took 176 wickets. Unfortunately, Zafar Iqbal could not strengthen his place in the Pakistan national team. In the mid-1990s, when Pakistan had a rich pool of all-rounders, he had limited opportunities to showcase his skills.
